You'd have to be living under a rock these days not to know that the world economy is in big trouble right now. Banks and investment houses are failing under the crushing burden of bad home mortgage debt. Prices are going up, and oil prices are going WAY up! Unemployment is increasing. The bad news goes on and on with no end in sight. So while the politicians try to figure out what can be done to get us all out of this mess, the rest of us are asking ourselves whet it is we can do to help ourselves get our own financial future under control. One of the best things that you can do to to take control of your own financial future is to start and build your own web-based business. Whether this starts as just a hobby to create some much needed supplemental income, or whether this is something you jump into full time, having your own online business lets you earn extra income without having to rely on your job, your boss, your husband, your wife, your kids or anyone else for that matter. Even during difficult economic times like these, having an online business can be a recession-proof was to make some extra money or eventually even to replace a fulltime income. Perhaps you have a product or service that you'd like to sell online. No product? No problem! Put together a website (several websites are even better) on subjects for which there are existing products and a large potential market of customers. Then join a pay per click program like Google Adsense and join some affiliate programs like Commission Junction, Azoogle, Advaliant, Clickbooth, etc. Put the Adsense and affiliate ads on your website and now you have a web-based affiliate business. Is it this easy? Of course not. Unless you know the basics of building an online business, you're going to end up wasting a lot of time. You will need to put in a fair amount of hard work, regardless of what many of the online gurus try to tell you. And yes you will need to spend a little money in order to make a lot more money back. But most of you who are reading this already know that building a website business is a good idea, and you have probably already started down that path. Perhaps you have a few affiliate websites already, or perhaps you have your own set of products you are already selling online.
But whether you are just starting out with a website business or whether you already have a whole bunch of websites, all of you will need one significant thing to make your business a success. That thing is: TRAFFIC You need people to visit your website. If no one visits your website, no one will click on your ads or purchase your products. It's as simple as that. How can you get traffic? There are two main ways people use. The first is to pay for traffic through programs like Google Adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing. Yes these will bring you traffic but competition for good keyword search terms is so fierce these days that the vast majority of people end up spending way more money on paying for traffic than they earn from the traffic they receive. Unless you are a Pay Per Click expert, or unless you have really deep pockets, this is a very risky way to build a web business. Fortunately there is another way to get traffic. Even better, this traffic source is FREE. What is this source of traffic? Yes, it is indeed Search Engines. If you can optimize your website so that the search engines rank your site highly for relevant keyword search terms, then people will find your website in the search engine listings and people will visit your website. So higher search engine rankings leads to higher traffic. But this begs the question "How do these websites get to the point where they rank highly in the search engines?" There are two answers to this question. One answer is that you need to optimize the pages on your website so that the search engines will recognize them as more valuable content than web pages on other websites. This isn't as easy as it once was to achieve. It used to be that webmasters could significantly improve their rankings by making some changes to their own webpages, like using good keywords in meta tags, using proper placement of header tags, etc. But these days, anyone who knows anything about search engine optimization will tell you that these on-page factors, while still useful, only account for 10% of your success in getting good search engine rankings. These days, the key to ranking well in the search engines is to get a large number of relevant inbound links to your website. It's important to realize that both the NUMBER and RELEVANCE of inbound links are very important! Sure, the search engines like to see lots of links to your website, but these links carry MUCH more weight if they come from websites that have content strongly related to your website content.For example, if you have a website on fishing poles, a link from a website on fishing boats will do you much more good than links from several websites on beauty supplies or doll clothes. The search engines know that the only way that they can continue to serve up relevant content for the wide variety of search terms they receive is to rank site according to how many RELEVANT backlinks they have. A second answer is that you need as much really good content on your website as possible. The search engines are getting really good at recognizing spammy content and poorly designed website, so you need to take the time and effort required to make good high quality websites with good content, the more good content the better. Getting Backlinks - The DilemmaUntil now, getting relevant backlinks was a ridiculously large chore. How do most webmasters do it? They try any of these methods:
And of course, you can purchase links, or purchase the services of a person or organization that can get these links for you, but the cost can get very large very quickly. Want to buy some quality links? The lowest price I have found is around $3 per link! Most services charge much more than this $10, $100 or even more per link! Need directory submissions? That will set you back a few hundred dollars. No matter which link building service you look at, the cost of buying links adds up to big money really fast. Getting Content- The DilemmaGetting good quality content for your website is an equally large task. Search engines are really good at recognizing poorly written unoriginal content. Even more importantly, your potential customers and web readers are really good at recognizing bad content! You must provide your readers with good quality information that will get them interested in your products and will keep them coming back to your website. So how do you get good original content? There are two main ways. First, if you can write clearly and effectively, and you know your subject matter reasonably well, you can write the content yourself. This is what most webmasters do for at least a reasonable portion of their websites. The second main way is to hire someone to write the content for you. The first approach can take a reasonable amount of time to complete, and the second approach can take a reasonable amount of money. And yes, for the main pages of your website you will need to do one of these or the other. But it sure would be nice to be able to greatly expand these core pages of your website with a much larger number of pages of related original content that will help bring visitors to your website.
